The concepts of Crystallized intelligence and Fluid intelligence were first distinguished by the American psychologist Raymond Carter in 1971.

Crystallized intelligence: refers to the ability to use knowledge acquired through past learning or experience.

Fluid intelligence: refers to the ability to reason and solve problems in unique and novel situations.

Acquired ability, can be changed through learning, would not decrease along with age.

Fluid intelligence involves abstract, inductive and visuospatial abilities.

Inborn ability, cannot be changed through learning, decrease along with age.
